Plate of the Week: 1979 Base Vanity

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Last week we took a look at a 1985 Victoria Passenger plate. This week we give a nod to Black Friday with this 1979 Base Vanity Plate .

Sometimes vanity plates actually spell out words. In this case we are getting a two-fer. One can only wonder what the meaning of the plate is. Is it a wet Toyota or something totally different.

Now we aren’t sure when exactly this plate was issued, but we can narrow it down from 1979 to 1991.

Plate of the Week: 1985 Victoria Passenger

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Last week we took a look at a 1959 Disabled American Veterans Sample. This week we head down under and take a look at a plate from another Garden State with a 1985 Victoria Passenger plate.

First issued starting in 1977, these passenger plates from the Australian state of Victoria had the slogan Garden State on them. So until about 1994, there were two states, albeit on different sides of the planet, with the same slogans. Since New Jersey was using the slogan on their plates since 1959, one wonders where they might have gotten the idea from!

Plate of the Week: 1959 Disabled American Veterans Sample

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Last week we took a look at a a circa 2007 School Vehicle I Sample. This week we look at a 1959 Disabled American Veterans Sample.

This might seem like an ordinary passenger sample plate, but it is not. As we have mentioned before, the letter D in the first letter position on a plate was the exclusive province of two types of plates – Disabled American Veterans (DAV) plates which begin with DAV and the various types of dealer related plates since 1959.

The DAV plates were a relatively new type when the Garden State introduced their new license plates in 1959, as they made their first appearance in 1957.

This type shouldn’t be confused with the later issue (1979 base and beyond) Disabled Vet plates, as the DAV plates are for members of the DAV instead of any disabled veteran.

Plate of the Week: 2007 School Vehicle I Sample

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Last week we took a look at a 1979 Base Commercial Sample. This week we look at a circa 2007 School Vehicle I Sample.

As we have mentioned before, New Jersey has an interesting habit of issuing sample plates with older format serial numbers. First a bit about the School Vehicle I plates. These plates were issued to the large school buses while the smaller “short buses” got the School Vehicle II tags. They were first issued in 1977 in the S1-123A format. The format flipped in about 1985 or 1986 to a 123A-S1 format which was put on hold in 1992 when seven character plates in the 1234AS1 format. When the 7 character format was exhausted, it resumed the 123A-S1 circa 1999-2000 which lasted about a year switching over to the current S1-A123 format.’

So in 2007 when this plate was produced, the format was the S1-A123, but this sample is in the original 1977 format. We should also add that this was not an “in stock” plate, but one that had to be requested and produced. Our guess is they just used the original type specs for the sample.
